The asparagus season will be launched a little differently this year

For the first time, Motta Produce, which grows asparagus at Koo Wee Rup, in Victoria will auction off its first box of white asparagus to raise money for the Epilepsy Foundation.

The auction will take place at the Melbourne Wholesale Market on August 24.

Motta Produce’s Marcus McKay said the industry wanted to kick off the Australian asparagus season with a bang as well as raising $25,000 for the foundation. He said the company started harvesting on Monday.

“This is the first time a season launch has been done for asparagus in Victoria in this way ... epilepsy is a disorder that has touched us personally and our aim is to give back,” Mr McKay said.

“Recent mild temperatures have assisted in improving the ground temperature, promoting early growth of asparagus spears from the crown.
