"Possible lettuce shortages next week"

It's calm in the fruit and vegetable trade. "In the holidays people traditionally seem to eat less fruit and vegetables. This usually pulls up by August 20th. We in Belgium have another holiday next week, and I expect it to get going after that," says Stefaan Dobbels of Gerdo. He indicates that the holiday period is always difficult. "We should really all close for two weeks. But after rain comes shine, shall we say."

Increase in lettuce
The prices are varied. "Today, (August 9th) 25 cents was given for lettuce. It's a good price now, but it was between 10 and 15 cents for a long time. Growers are now harvesting less and the demand has risen, so you immediately notice that in the price. I expect lettuce and other lettuce varieties to rise further in price. There may be shortages in lettuce next week. More supply is expected the week after."

Gerdo also sells other vegetables. "Leek is starting to get going. Today;s price is slightly higher, but in recent days it was very bad. The price is much higher than last year on average. Yesterday around 25 cents was given. Today another ten cents was added."

The pepper price seriously dropped on August 9, according to the trader. "We're talking 20 cents less for red and green. They went from 1.10 to 90 cents. Yellow finished on 80 cents on August 9."
