Russia: Sharp increase in potato and cabbage prices in Omsk

A sharp rise in potato and cabbage prices has caused a significant increase in the cost of the borsch set. According to data from the Territorial Body for Federal State Statistics for the Omsk Region (Omskstat), food products in the region have become 3.5% more expensive in 2017, reports Om1.

Rising food prices are a key trend this year, according to statisticians. Potatoes, in particular, have recorded the greatest growth and can currently be purchased for 80 roubles per kilo (about 1.16 Euro). For their part, cabbage prices have risen by 1.5 times since May this year. These fluctuations are seasonal in nature. When last year's harvest ends, the region is forced to buy vegetables abroad in anticipation of this year's harvest.

As stated by the Head of Omskstat, Elena Shorin, "the vegetable ingredients of the traditional borscht cost the consumer 1.5 times more in June than in May, and 3 times more than in December. Such increases are due primarily to the rise in the price of potatoes. These price increases are seasonal in nature."

Dairy products are also becoming more expensive, but there are commodity groups for which prices have fallen, including meat, poultry, eggs and cucumbers.

Despite the fluctuations, the Omsk region remains the leader in Siberia when it comes to regions with the most affordable food prices.
