China: Vegetable plantations in Fujian grow by 10% in a year
Statistics indicate that the area used to grow vegetables in Fujian province has reached a total of 852.453 hectares, which is more than 10% larger than last year. During the second half of this year the area on which vegetables were sown increased by more than 466.667 hectares, which will result in a total output of 100 million tons. Besides meeting consumer demand within the province, there will be another vegetable surplus of approximately 40%.
Although the supply of vegetables in Fujian province is in general sufficient, the province is about to enter a period in which both rain and snow will fall heavily and in which hurricanes will abound. There will be more rainfall across the whole province. In addition, the third season is the season in which the vegetable crops are rotated, which might cause a growing shortage of some kinds of vegetables. Therefore, prices of vegetables during the third period in Fujian province will be very seasonal and might increasingly rise.
