AU: Veg prices soar by 400% with tomatoes reaching $10 a kilo

The price of the weekly family shop is set to skyrocket, with the devastation caused by Cyclone Debbie increasing fruit and vegetable prices by up to 400 per cent.

Wreaking havoc across far north Queensland in March, the tropical storm resulted in high winds, widespread flash flooding and saw a total of 12 people lose their lives.

But despite it being almost three months since Cyclone Debbie hit land, the impact of the storm is still being felt across Australia, with the price of tomatoes soaring to as much as $10 a kilogram.

'(It's) mainly tomatoes, capsicums and beans - all of those crops that were grown on the eastern seaboard along Queensland,' Mr Shields told the Today Show.

While the 400 per cent increase has so far affected tomatoes, capsicums and beans, there are concerns other popular produce may also see a price hike.
