South Australian grower sees success in broccoli/kale hybrid

Around 15 years ago, South Australian lettuce farmer Graeme Pitchford took a gamble on an emerging hybrid vegetable. It is a cross between broccoli and kale and his family-owned farm on the outskirts of Adelaide was one of the first places to grow a broccolini crop in Australia.

Pitchford Produce remains the only licensed supplier in South Australia — to be able to grow the crop, growers pay a fee to the company Perfection Fresh that developed the hybrid.

Mr Pitchford said broccolini may be a little vegetable but demand for it just keeps growing.

"When we first started growing it, people had no idea what broccolini was and now you say you're a broccolini grower, most people know what you're talking about," he said.

"Broccolini sales in South Australia have steadily increased over the years.

"Summer production is our best time and we've been doing about 48,000 bunches a week [but we] would like us to increase that to about 72,000."

With consumer demand for broccolini forecasted to keep rising, Pitchford Produce started a project to double the size of their nursery on the Fleurieu Peninsula.
