The Ministry of Economic Development of the Russian Federation has observed a slowdown in the growth of prices for fruit and vegetable products and expects this trend to continue in the following months.
"The slowdown in the growth rate of prices for fruit and vegetable products is likely to continue in the following months. According to weekly data, the average daily price growth slowed to 0.18% in the first week of June, compared to the 0.25% of early May."
At the same time, overall inflation in May remained at 4.1% in annual terms, which is slightly higher than the estimate made by the Ministry of Economic Development of Russia a month earlier.
The main reason for this deviation, according to the Ministry, was just the dynamics of fruit and vegetable prices due to the atypically cold weather in April-May and, consequently, a delay in receipt of the early harvest.
A significant contribution to the rise of fruit and vegetable prices in May, as in April, was the increases recorded by potatoes and borscht vegetables (except for cucumbers and tomatoes), which grew by 30.7% and 21.6%, respectively; a result, on the one hand, due to the low stocks, and on the other, to the low volumes of the early harvest due to the cold spring.
For their part, greenhouse vegetable crops (cucumbers and tomatoes) prices decreased significantly, by 18%, compared to the 1.6% growth recorded a month earlier. However, this could not fully compensate for the rising prices of other vegetables.
