Spain: Valencia to produce fewer Clemenules next season

The next orange campaign will be less productive, especially when it comes to the Clemenules, as pointed out by the president of the Citrus Board of the Lonja of Valencia, Jenaro Aviñó, who said that this is due to the large amount of fruit that has been left in the trees this year, "between 600,000 and 800,000 tonnes, which will have a direct impact in the next citrus season."

In fact, according to Aviñó, this is causing the first purchases of citrus for the next season to be made already. "There are already stores that are buying fruit, especially of Navelina oranges and Marisol clementines," he affirms. These purchases are mainly taking place in southern regions of Alicante, states Aviñó, and although Castellon is not affected by this, it can be a sign of what is to come in the campaign.

The president of the Citrus Board is thus expecting a totally different season compared to the previous one, which has closed this week with its latest report and which has been a disaster for the Clemenules. As has already been said on numerous occasions, the main cause for this was the rainstorms of December and January, which resulted in a great amount of fruit not going on sale and therefore not being taken into account for the price statistics. This has led to significant differences in the minimum and maximum prices, which is unusual. In any case, the highest prices have also been lower than those of previous years.
