Bangladesh lemon growers see strong market price and demand

Lemon cultivators of eight districts under the Rajshahi division in India are making good profits this season due to high demand and a fair market price.

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said a large number of farmers had started farming the citrus fruit on an experimental basis a few years back in the region and achieved remarkable success. Now, they have grown the fruit on a large scale as it has proved to be a lucrative cultivation, DAE added.

Lemon trees generally grow on high fallow lands where the scope of other crop cultivation is limited. Some 250 saplings can be planted on each bigha of land which produce an average 60,000 to 70,000 pieces of lemons. Each hali (four pieces) is being sold from Tk 8.0 to Tk 10 in the retail market whereas Tk 6.0 to Tk 7.0 in wholesale market.

A successful farmer, Bulbul Hossain of Shajadpur upazila under Sirajganj district, narrated his successful story of cultivating the lemon in his 0.90 acre of land spending Tk 45000. He has earned a profit of Tk 2 lakh from his garden from February to June.
