Colombia: The Tommy mango is the most expensive mango variety in the country

"Prices obviously depend on the law of supply and demand, but we can say that the Tommy mango is currently the most expensive mango, as it costs about 3,000 to 3,200 Colombian pesos per kilo," stated Fabio Usai, the general manager of the Cooltropy Company. This variety is followed by the Yulima and Azucar varieties, which cost about 2,500 Colombian pesos per kilo; and by the Keitt variety, that stands at 2,200 Colombian pesos per kilo.

This young company, which was launched less than a year ago and has already begun exporting mangoes to Europe, specifically to Spain and France, considers that the Tommy mango is not sufficiently well known in international markets to conduct weekly shipments. "We know that the Kent variety is the most popular mango, but we'd like to promote other varieties that we have because we know consumers might like them much more than the Kent variety," Usai stated.

Currently, Cooltropy sells mangoes from various areas of Colombia, such as: the Tommy and Keitt mangoes from Bolombolo; the Yulima and Keiit varieties from the Yulima area; and the Azucar mango from the coast. "There's been a decrease in production in the last two years and a consequent increase in prices. However, we must bear in mind that the climate strongly affects this fruit," Usai said.
