Bolivia: Entrepreneurs ask for complaint against Chile due to customs strikes

Following the latest strikes by customs personnel in Chile, which has brought the transit of more than 1,380 trucks of Bolivian cargo to a halt, the Confederation of Private Entrepreneurs of Bolivia (CEPB) has asked for a complaint against Chile to be issued to the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the Latin American Integration Association (ALADI).

The entity suggested that the complaint should be made based on international treaties and trade agreements, which are recognised by Bolivia and Chile, as reported by the Fides news agency. In that context, the organization mentioned Chile's failure to comply with the 1904 Treaty, which guarantees free transit.

According to CEPB estimates, the total losses caused by the strikes, taking into account both exports and imports, exceed US$ 11 million daily. CEPB president Ronald Nostas commented that the strikes are detrimental to free transit and Bolivian trade.

The strike of customs officials in Chile has already lasted for a week and will continue indefinitely, according to the latest statement from the guild that brings those workers together.
