Spain: Outrage in stonefruit sector due to German speculators

Spanish stonefruit prices are under high pressure at the moment. The reason for this situation, according to APOEXPA, is the fierce price war between major distribution chains in Germany, one of the main importers of Spanish stonefruit in terms of volume, and where prices end up having an influence on those of other European destinations.

"At the moment, there is great indignation in the Spanish stonefruit sector," states APOEXPA president Joaquín Gómez. "We don't blame large distributors for this situation, but the intermediaries of some major German supermarket chains, who have promised many Murcian fruit exporters programs with large volumes at relatively low prices for pure speculation, without any authorization and without paying attention to the balance between supply and demand."

According to the representative of this association of producers and exporters, the situation has been aggravated with the start of the paraguayo harvest, which has recently kicked off in Murcia. "Since the beginning of the paraguayo campaign, we have exported some 3 million kilos of excellent quality fruit that is reaching normal prices in all destinations except Germany," denounces the representative of this association of producers.
