Colombo lemon farming taking off in Narsingdi, Bangladesh
The cultivation of Colombo lemons is ringing up fortunes for farmers and gaining popularity in the district due to the economic prospect of the crops.
A number of farmers had started small scale cultivation of Colombo lemons a few years back on an experimental basis in four upazilas of the district and achieved remarkable success. That success encouraged many others to cultivate and raise orchards of the juicy and extraordinarily flavorful fruit.
According to DAE Narsingdi, farmers in four upazilas of the district are currently cultivating Colombo lemons in 1180 orchards on 300 hectares of land. This year they have so far produced over 5,200 tonnes of lemon in the district.
Deputy Director, Department of Agriculture Extension, Narsingdi Latafat Hossain told the news agency that Colombo lemons have great demand in the local markets and other distant markets. Now this variety of lemon is being exported abroad, especially to European countries and the Middle East. A kilogram of Colombo lemons is being sold at Tk 50 to Tk 60 in the local kitchen markets which contains only four to five pieces.
