Tomatoes: A cash crop for Australian wholesalers

Tomatoes are stealing the top spot in wholesale vegetable value rankings in Australia as growers continue to build range and value, according to leading food market researchers Freshlogic.

Managing director Martin Kneebone said latest research showed savvy tomato growers and retailers were capitalising on households making four to five supermarket visits a week in search of smaller amounts and wider ranges of vegetables.

“The retail value of tomatoes is pretty much a stand out, that’s $1.2 billion,” Mr Kneebone told a national Hort Connections conference in Adelaide.

Tomatoes were second to potatoes in high volumes sold in the last financial year, but Mr Kneebone said branding, range and packaging meant higher value tomato sales.
