Western Australian oranges head to Asian markets
AgriFresh grows the fruits over 200 hectares of land on what was once a mixed grain and sheep farm. Managing director Joseph Ling said production would be up almost 60 per cent this year, and the trees would reach full production in four years' time.
About 40 per cent of the fruit grown at AgriFresh goes to export markets, and Mr Ling hopes this figure will increase to 80 per cent in the coming years as the tonnage picked grows.
"A lot of the fruits will be targeted towards the domestic [market] in the first month, but starting from mid-season to late season, a lot of the fruits will be headed overseas," Mr Ling said.
"WA has continually seen the citrus industry growing. I think over the last four or five years production has increased, but I think we'll still see a little bit more increments in that area over the next three years."
