"For large international distributors to be attracted by a variety, you have to respond to their demands," affirms a representative of Semillas Fitó, which invests 25% of its profits in R&D. "We develop varietal improvement programmes that aim to guarantee profitability for the producers and allow them to supply the quality that the markets demand," they point out.
An example of this is the segment of Italian sweet peppers for export, where the company is continuously developing new varieties, as is the case of the Perotti, an Italian sweet pepper that has yielded very good results in the greenhouses of Almeria, where it has already been tested.
Because of all this, the Perotti is going to be the flagship variety of Semillas Fitó in the sweet red Italian pepper segment this campaign. Italian sweet peppers are normally sold in flow packs of two and the Perotti meets these specifications, as it is a pepper of adequate weight, smooth, with a magnificent red colour and an unbeatable sweet flavour (between 9 and 11 degrees Brix), as well as a very good post-harvest.
As reported by the seed company, the Perotti has an excellent resistance to diseases (L4 and spotted) and is recommended for transplants in August. It is a vigorous plant, of easy setting, very strong and healthy, which yields a high production of peppers with a uniform shape, colour and quality throughout the entire cycle. In all greenhouses where this variety has already been planted the result has been excellent, so the growers who are betting on this highly demanded specialty have very good prospects."
