Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita has said that his government's dialogue with the European Union (EU) to find "the best way to comply" with the European Court of Justice (ECJ) ruling on the implementation of the agricultural agreement in the Sahara has been satisfactory so far.
In a joint appearance before the media, together with Spanish Foreign Minister Alfonso Dastis, after their meeting in the palace of Viana, Bourita has assured that the position of his country on the ruling of the European court "has been very clear," both at a national level and before those responsible in Europe.
Both ministers have stressed the importance of strengthening relations between their countries and moving forward in the economic ones, consolidating the role of Spain as Morocco's number one trade partner.
Bourita stressed that "what was clear from the very next day after the Court's ruling was that the flow and stability of agricultural trade between the EU and Morocco had to be protected."
At the same time, Bourita added that a dialogue is underway to find "the best way to comply with the ruling, so that the essential part of the partnership between Morocco and the EU can be protected," taking into account the strategic interests of both parties.
Bourita said they are waiting for the "start of formal dialogue" to analyse how Morocco and Europe can address this issue in the future.
For his part, the Spanish minister said that Morocco is a "privileged, strategic and outstanding partner" and congratulated the new government of the Arab country.
That is why the head of Spanish diplomacy has decided to deepen and further improve that relationship, which is excellent in the political, economic, social and cultural spheres.
The goal is to extend this cooperation to a multilateral environment, particularly within the EU. Spain and Morocco are very interested in showcasing their "model" collaboration and the objective now is to extend it to Africa.
"We would like to work together to launch projects of common interest, especially for the African continent, which offers great opportunities for the future, as well as great challenges," added Dastis.
Nasser Bourita, whose visit to Madrid has been one of the first bilateral talks he has made, has highlighted the priority given by King Mohamed VI to the relations between Morocco and Spain.
He described the relations between the two countries as "strong, high quality and satisfactory" and made it clear that there is an ambition to improve them even more, referring also to the constant political dialogue on regional issues.
The Moroccan minister, who has been in his position since 5 April, has defined the cooperation in the field of security as exemplary and the one on immigration as very satisfactory.
