"Lettuce has been in a dip for weeks"

The season is almost in full swing. "May and June are usually the best months for us with lots of trade," says Robert Van Ooijen of Van Ooijen Fruit and Vegetable Import. He buys products from the Belgian auctions and indicates that the vegetable prices at the moment (May 1) aren't that special. "When it comes to peppers the yellow ones are at 1.15, the red 1.25 and the green around 70 to 75 cents. What stands out is that the small peppers are doing better in price. Due to the colder and grey weather the production is lower and smaller peppers cost 30 to 40 cents per kilo more than their big brothers."

In a dip

According to Robert lettuce hasn't been doing well for a while. "The headed lettuce has been in a dip for weeks and the prices aren't going higher than 15 cents. After the cold in Spain this year there was little production for a while for all lettuce varieties. Now there is more than enough. Not that much is given for the special varieties either. The Lollo Rossa is at 30 to 35 cents at the moment and Bionda only 15. They've done better."

Aubergines and courgettes
The aubergine prices haven't had many peaks yet. "At the moment between 55 and 60 cents is paid for aubergines between 225 and 300 grams. Courgettes are still a lot lower, prices vary from 10 to 20 cents. We hope they don't go in the same direction as last year. It was 4/5 cents when the volume was very high back then."

Strawberries and asparagus higher
These two are doing better in price than the others. "Asparagus prices have risen since last week. On Friday they were around 5.5 to 6 Euro and now they're 8. It also has to do with the supply on the national holiday (May 1). There was less supply than last Friday. The strawberry prices are also still high. This weekend they went down a bit but it was 1.50 to 2 Euro per half kilo for the big ones. 1.20 to 1.30 was paid for the small ones."
