Ukraine cucumber prices fall to lowest point in 5 years

During the holidays cucumber prices in Ukraine have fallen by almost 2 times. Moreover, today Ukrainian cucumbers are offered at the lowest price in the last 5 years. According to Info-Shuvar, even before the May holidays farms of southern and Zakarpattia regions cucumbers were offered at 15-17 UAH/kg (0,53-0,60 EUR/kg), and now farmers have already agreed sell cucumbers for 6-9 UAH/kg (0,21 -0,32 EUR/kg).

Today Ukrainian cucumbers are almost twice as cheap as a year ago. In addition, growers are complaining that even this price did not ensure high demand and it is connected with limited exports. Recently Ukraine exported from 10 to 17 thousand tons of cucumbers annually.

The largest volume of Ukrainian cucumbers was shipped to Russia, which has prohibited any supplies of fruits and vegetables from Ukraine for 2 years already. It was the Russian embargo that has forced Ukrainian producers to seek for alternative markets.

"Last year we saw the first significant change in the geography of supplies of Ukrainian cucumbers. Despite the decrease in comparison to previous years, we still have achieved positive qualitative changes, namely, we showed the Ukrainian produce to the rather demanding EU market,” says Tetiana Hetman, head of the Info-Shuvar. “This year there are all preconditions for increasing deliveries to the region. For the first three months of this season, the export volume of cucumbers from Ukraine to the EU increased by 2 times."
