Indonesia regency begins growing program to reduce veg imports

A high demand for vegetables in Papua's Jayawijaya regency has prompted a regional growing programme in ten districts this year. There has been increasing dependency on vegetables imported from other districts.

Yudhalara Monim of the Department of Agriculture and Food Crops in Jayawijaya said, planting sites had been chosen close to watersheds. Cayenne pepper, cabbage, cauliflower and green beans were among the region's traditional crops.

The local government will also encourage growers to plant onions and various fruit.
