The negative effects of Ukraine's bountiful vegetable harvest

According to the State Statistics Committee of Ukraine, in 2016 the area under cultivation for the main types of vegetables in Ukraine increased by 3.4%, thanks to which the country harvested thousands of tons of produce.

Compared to 2015 results improved by 6%. It is one of the best gross harvests of vegetables over the last 5 years. However, this marketing year was a season of low prices for the farmers. Although, the Ukrainian farmers have experienced seasons of extremely low prices before, it was the first time, in 2016, that such a wide range of vegetables was overproduced.

Director of "AhroAnaliz", Ltd., Vadym Dudka shared his opinion in a conversation with Info-Shuvar.

When Info-Shuvar asked what types of vegetable producers were most disappointed with in 2016/2017 season, he responded:

"There were low prices for the common vegetables (beetroot, potato, carrot, onion, cabbage) in 2016. If the case with onions, cabbage and potatoes is regularly repeating, it surprises no-one, but such a drop in the price of carrots and beets has not been observed for a while. Peppers and eggplants were sold at extremely low prices in summer, below cost price. Field grown tomatoes sales were also having hard times."

"Producers of the common vegetables, who were unable to sell locally grown produce straight from the field, had to store the vegetables, and they were affected the most. After the winter, prices have not significantly increased, but the cost of storage, as always, constituted a large part of the expenses."

"It is easier to say which kinds of vegetables gave a fairly good income in 2016. Some of these were garlic, cauliflower and broccoli."
