"Italy: "Aubergine price unstable due to bad weather this winter"

Weather issues, including the cold, frost and rain that hit in the months of December and January, have had an impact on the production volume available at the moment. "Prices have been fluctuating since the beginning of the season for this reason. Last month, a kilo cost 2.80 Euro and now it stands at 1 Euro," states Paolo Filici, head of Azienda Donnalucata.

Although it is still a little early to predict the total volume that will be obtained, "last year we had about 300 tonnes of this aubergine and this year we expect to have a little less," says Ficili. This volume will be exported to France, Luxembourg, Germany and the UK, with a small part remaining also in Italy. "It is a typical product of Sicily and, although produced in other countries, we don't face any direct competition," explains Ficili.
