The sixth meeting between Mercasa and the General Directors of the management companies of the wholesale markets has been recently held in Bilbao with the goal of analysing the fundamental aspects of their draft strategic plans. There was also an exchange of opinions on priority lines of action, setting deadlines for the final drafting of these plans, as well as for their approval and enforcement.
The event kicked off with a speech from Pablo González, Director of Strategy and Operations at Mercasa, who presented the advances made in recent months in the joint work on the strategic plans of the wholesale markets.
He was followed by Aitor Argote Ibáñez, Managing Director of Mercabilbao, who presented an overview of the development of this company, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, and focused on some of the current aspects of the operation of the wholesale markets, pointing out possible lines of action that were the subject of debate among the attendees.
The next speech was delivered by the Spanish Federation of Hospitality. Antonio Khalaf Avilés, General Director of Fehractiva, as well as Javier González Iglesias and Jaime Banús Pallarés, CEO and CTO, respectively of Distrinet, presented the projects of the Federation for the digitization of the Horeca sector, with a detailed outline of the e-commerce application project for this channel and the plans for its definitive implementation. Regarding this important initiative, it was agreed to maintain a continuous relationship in order to define the possible ways in which the wholesale markets and their operators can collaborate in the supply, mainly of fresh foods.
In the field of Corporate Social Responsibility, David Esteller Sobredo, head of Aecoc's Food Waste project, analysed the current situation and future prospects of the food waste issue, including the incipient regulatory initiatives in different countries and autonomous regions in Spain, and mentioned various initiatives that have contributed to mitigate this problem, some of which are already being carried out in the commercial distribution sector.
Lastly, in the field of logistics for fresh foods, Benjamín Calzón Ramos, Director General of Business Units at SEUR, presented a detailed list of the different activities that the company is developing in this field, highlighting the problems and nuances encountered in the different modalities, with a special focus on the modern field of e-commerce, pointing out possible lines of collaboration with the wholesale markets and their operators.
