First German asparagus ready for harvest

The start of the 2017 asparagus season is on its threshold. In Germany the first asparagus are now being harvested. The amounts are still limited at the moment, the 'Deutsche Bauernverband' (DBV) reported. Due to the rising temperatures there are larger amounts of asparagus expected on the market as of mid-April. This will depend on the weather over the next few days.

In the past year the German asparagus harvest was around 120,000 tonnes. The German harvest is sufficient to supply every German with around 1.5 kilos of asparagus. The asparagus growers expect the harvest this year to be around the same amount. Despite all estimates, the temperature and amount of sun affects the growth of asparagus like no other crop and therefore also the total harvest. As the supply determines the price, there can be no price estimate yet. At the start of the season it doesn't seem the prices will be lower than last year.

In Germany asparagus is grown on around 22,000 hectares of asparagus. The main cultivation regions are Lower Saxony with 4,929 hectares, followed by Nordrhein-Westfalen (3,724 hectares), Brandenburg (3,345 hectares), Bayern (3,088 hectares) and Baden-Württemberg (2,307 hectares). The smallest growing region is in Saarland at 47 hectares. Asparagus is also grown in Hessen (1,877 hectares), Rheinland-Pfalz (1,180 hectares), Sachsen-Anhalt (607 hectares), Schleswig-Holstein (400 hectares), Thüringen (315 hectares), Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (219 hectare) and Sachsen (237 hectares).
