Rhineland: Early start to rhubarb season

Rhubarb has grown to be a trend in recent years. Right on time for spring the first fresh rhubarb stems are now available from the open ground of growers cooperative, Landgard, in the German trade.

The growers cooperative started harvesting rhubarb from the open ground on March 21 in the Rhineland, the main German growing region for rhubarb. Labinot Elshani of Landgard: "Due to the cold winter and the favourable conditions for rhubarb over the last few weeks, we can offer our customers the first fresh rhubarb from the Rhineland over a week earlier than last year. Looking at the continuing rhubarb trend we have continually increased our cultivation size in recent years. The prospects here in Germany, with regards to the expected amount and quality, are good.

Rhubarb from the Rhineland is an export hit
In the Rhineland alone there are 30 Landgard growers who grow rhubarb on around 250 hectares. This makes Landgard one of the largest German rhubarb suppliers. The growers cooperation doesn't just supply its rhubarb to the German market. The spring vegetable is also an export hit at Landgard and goes to customers in England, France, Austria, Scandinavia and Switzerland, among other countries.

Around 90 percent of the rhubarb harvest from early cultivation and open ground cultivation arrives in the trade as fresh produce. The rest is industrially processed, in which conserve production and juicing have become increasingly important in recent years.
