Situation in Peru affects Spanish asparagus prices
Only 20% of the Spanish production of wild asparagus remains in the country, with domestic demand being often being covered by asparagus from other origins. "Spain ships this product mainly to Italy, Sweden, the United Kingdom and Norway," explains Manuel Jesús Abril, manager of Mediterranean Fruits & Vegetables. It is a fairly demanded vegetable and is highly anticipated each year. "For marketers like us it is difficult to gain ground in this market because most producers already have agreements with their usual customers," says Abril.
The representative of Mediterranean Fruits & Vegetables explains that “we perceive prices to be slightly higher than last year." 500 gram bunches are being marketed for between 2.50 and 3 Euro, depending on the calibre. "It is worth noting that the disaster in Peru, which is a very strong producer, has taken a toll on the supply in the international market," states Abril.
