Germany: Starting shot for asparagus from Beelitz

The very first asparagus of the season from well-known German asparagus cultivation region Beelitz have arrived, according to German website proplanta.de. Asparagus grower Ernst-August Winkelmann said about 1.3 tonnes of asparagus were harvested at his company last weekend.

Initially, the asparagus are only sold in farmer’s shops. However, growers have announced that harvest will properly start for the asparagus growers in the region next Tuesday. Ernst-August: “It’s a very early start of the harvest. Last week, only about 40 asparagus were harvested per day. But every warm day results in more asparagus shooting up.” Last year, almost 20,000 tonnes of asparagus were harvested from 3,345 hectares in the entire federal state of Brandenburg, according to figures from the Agency for Statistics of the federal state.
