Free trade agreements are essential for agro-food in the EU

TTIP, CETA or TTP are acronyms that involve many hours of negotiations, sometimes failed or interrupted, in order to close international trade agreements that facilitate the flow of large volumes of products, including food and agricultural ones, at zero or reduced tariffs.

Today, there is no political and economic agenda of any world power that does not contain aspects related to trade agreements and their implications for each economic sector, both nationally and internationally.

In this sense, the agro-food sector is one of the most interested in analysing their possible impact and preparing for them. A recent study conducted by the European Commission highlighted that these agreements contribute to increased sales and protect jobs in the agro-food industry.

European Commissioner for Agriculture Phil Hogan stated that three of the latest agreements, signed with Mexico, South Korea and Switzerland, have made it possible to increase the value of the European Union's agro-food exports by more than 1 billion Euros and that this helps maintain "thousands of jobs."

Sensitive sector
The agro-food industry is, however, particularly sensitive to the conditions set out in these agreements, with the European sector wondering whether its productions will compete on equal terms.

In that sense, the spokesperson of the European Commission's Office in Spain, Dimitri Barua, assures that they are, indeed, "sensitive" sectors which require greater levels of protection.
