Spain: Yellow courgette exports reach record high

Although they are grown in Spain, Israel and the Netherlands, yellow courgettes are not exactly well-known. In Spain, Almeria is the province that stands out the most in terms of acreage. In the latest campaign, a total of 7,500 hectares were devoted to the crop, with a maximum production of 428.425 tonnes; 4% more than in the previous year. Exports have reached their highest level of the last five seasons, with a volume close to 260,000 tonnes. The turnover is close to 200 million Euro.

In Almeria, the most widespread variety is the green courgette, which has an elongated and cylindrical shape and a more or less clear green colour. Other courgettes are also cultivated, although they are not as common in the market, as is the case of the round or white varieties. Yellow courgettes are almost unknown. The green ones can be found in any supermarket, but finding a yellow one will be a lot tougher, since it is considered an exotic product, even if it is not. In Israel, the acreage devoted to the cultivation of this variety has increased compared to last year and the product is sold in many places across Europe. Round courgettes are known as "summer squash". Yellow courgettes are eaten raw and they are quite delicious accompanied with a little lemon juice.
