Polish apple and pear producers in need of more support

The European Commission will grant more support to producers who reported losses due to the introduction of the Russian embargo three years ago, as announced by Agriculture Commissioner, Phil Hogan. Apple and pear producers in Poland are particularly in need of this aid.

The Polish Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Krzysztof Jurgiel, proposed to raise the limit on fruit allowed to be withdrawn from the market in exchange for compensations, since this would reduce the volume of fruits and vegetables for sale.

"The price of apples has fallen by approximately 10-15 percent compared to the previous year. And it is also because of this that the Commission may intervene," stated Jurgiel.

To date, the Commission has earmarked 450 million Euro for the payment of compensations to producers; a significant amount of this total, nearly 215 million Euro, has been paid to Polish fruit growers.

Commission data shows that Polish producers have withdrawn nearly 700,000 tonnes of fruit and vegetables from the 1 and a half million tonnes withdrawn in the European Union as a whole.
