Lebanese Farmers’ Association demands end to Egyptian potato imports in mid-March

The head of the Farmer's Association in Lebanon, Antoine Howayek, has called for the importation of Egyptian potatoes to stop by 15 March and for the total volume not to exceed 40,000 tonnes. He has also asked for further restrictions on the import of Egyptian agricultural and industrial products in order to prevent the dumping of cheap products in Lebanon.

He stressed the need to protect potato producers in Akkar, given how severely affected they were last year by the entry of 12,000 tonnes of Egyptian potatoes on the last day that imports were allowed (31 March), as this had a considerable impact on prices.

Howayek also stressed the need to reduce the import of Egyptian onion and watermelon imports to Lebanon for the benefit of the domestic production.

It is worth noting that Egypt's imports from Lebanon fell to $ 58 million, compared with exports to Lebanon, which were worth $775 million.
