“Hard to find good Spanish green bell peppers now”

This is the period when retailers start switching from Spanish to domestic product. “Exactly when the supermarkets switch depends on prices. For example, Belgian aubergines were cheap last week, less than a euro. Some retailers then choose to switch to domestic vegetables,” says one Belgian trader.

Aubergines rise again
He indicates that the demand for Spanish vegetables is still good. “That usually continues for a while. Spanish aubergines are now at 4.50 euro per five kilograms. These are regular prices for the time of year. Belgian prices have risen again to 1.50, 1.60 euro after increasing demand. Last week, the prices were around 85 cents. Cultivators can be pleased again with this week’s prices, it is a good price for a kilogram of aubergines.” The trader says that courgette prices are very acceptable. “These are around 5.50 euro for five kilograms. Not too expensive and not too cheap, a workable price.”

Prices for bell peppers are still acceptable as well. “Domestic supply is just starting again, but it’s not very much yet. Good Spanish red bell peppers are still selling at high prices. Red, yellow and green are all around 11 euro for five kilograms. Green was much lower last week, but it is hard to find green quality bell peppers this week. That means prices immediately increase by a few euros.”
