Greece: Zero use of “fruit and veg in schools” funds denounced
Manolis Kefalogiannis, of New Democracy (ND) and member of the Group of the European People's Party, has criticised the zero absorption by the Greek government of the funds from the European program to supply fruit and vegetables in schools.
The European Commission recently announced the percentage of the funds that had been absorbed by each Member. This program, intended to facilitate the distribution of fruits and vegetables in schools, had a total budget of 150 million Euro for the 2015-2016 period.
Bulgaria, Hungary and Lithuania have absorbed all the funds available to them. Cyprus has absorbed 84.8% and Croatia 96.9%.
Greece, however, is the only EU country that is still at 0%. Not a single Euro from the 3.1 million Euros assigned have been used by the Government, which has been accused of indifference and incompetence.
This ineptitude of the Greek government has also caused concern among Greek agricultural enterprises active in this sector, since such programs may help cover losses caused by capital controls and the Russian embargo.
