Grothandel Claessens offers increasing range of miniature vegetables

“A thousand kilograms of miniature chantenay carrots sold since January”

Nowadays, many products can be bought in a miniature version. That trend is also noticeable in fruit and vegetables. “We offer, among other products, miniature beetroot, miniature parsnip, miniature turnips, miniature broccoli, miniature corn, miniature romaine lettuce, miniature yellow beetroot, miniature fennel and miniature carrots. We sell more miniature vegetables each year,” says Guy from Groothandel Claessens.

Chantenay
Guy indicates that they have various colours of the miniature chantenay carrots, including white, purple, orange and a mix. “These are now primarily cultivated in the UK, but they originally come from the Chantenay region in France. They are sold under the brand Sugar Babe. The miniature carrots have a wonderful and sweet flavour. Besides, they are easily prepared and do not have to be peeled.”

Good things in small packages
Buyers are mainly chefs and the better catering establishment. “We have been told that they appreciate these products, because they can be very nicely presented on plates. And it immediately gives an added value to the dish. Because they are small, they are more fun to present.”

Considering the trend of recent years, Guy expects an increase in the miniature carrots. “We are selling more and more of them. From January until now, we've already sold 1,000 kilograms of chantenay carrots. The benefits are enormous, and the product is very versatile. You can steam the carrots, cook, bake or fry them, they can be eaten raw, and they can even be made into juice.”
