Fruit Vandepoel supplies asparagus under own brand

“Asparagus prices fell 3 euros since beginning of season”

The asparagus season will soon begin, but the domestic asparagus from greenhouses has been available for a while already. “We started selling asparagus under our own brand about three weeks ago. For now, we will just supply our own brand,” says Lieve Verheyden, purchaser of vegetables with Fruit Vandepoel. “We have had asparagus under Vandepoel in our assortment for many years now, and customers are very satisfied with the product. In that way, we give a certain added value to the product.”

Decrease of 3 euro
Lieve indicates that volumes are not very large yet. “I have plenty to supply our own customers, but the market supply is not very large yet. Right now, restaurants and some good-quality shops are our buyers. Prices did not start extremely high this year, we started with higher prices last year. At the start of the season we were around 15 euro, and that decreased to 13/14 euro last week. Last Wednesday, prices were around 12 euro, so 3 euro less than at the start of the season. However, these prices are still not extremely low.”

The expectations for the coming weeks are dependent on the weather. When we have warm temperatures and sunny weather, there will be more demand and more supply. “We are currently still selling greenhouse asparagus, but volumes will increase considerably when outdoor asparagus become available,” Lieve concludes.
