The regional government has reaffirmed its commitment to the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) "Ajo Morado de Las Pedroñeras" (Purple garlic of Las Pedroñeras); a crop that generates thousands of jobs and contributes to the vibrancy of the rural territory of Castile-La Mancha, especially in the producing districts, which have an outstanding presence of women.
This was pointed out by the Councillor of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Development, Francisco Martínez Arroyo, during a visit of the President of Castile-La Mancha, Emiliano García-Page, to the facilities of the Garlic Cooperative 'San Isidro El Santo', in Las Pedroñeras, Cuenca, which is devoted to the production, handling and marketing of garlic.
Martínez Arroyo highlighted the relevance of the PGI "Ajo Morado de Las Pedroñeras", which "is a representative of Castile-La Mancha in the world," as well as its contribution to the continuing promotion of such a profitable sector, and recalled that the regional government has worked for the recovery of the Garlic Group, which will meet again on 9 March.
The Councillor for Agriculture, Environment and Rural Development has also pinpointed the need of the garlic sector to strive for commercial integration. "The idea is for companies not to lose their identities, but allow the product's marketing to be in fewer hands, as this, in turn, would make it possible for the number of rural entrepreneurs to increase."
