Poland granted new limit for withdrawal of apples

The European Commission has granted Poland a new limit for the withdrawal from the market of almost 8 thousand tonnes of fruit and vegetables, as reported by the Ministry of Agriculture in a statement. The Ministry decided that it will be used for the withdrawal of apples.

The withdrawal from the market is an instrument of support for fruit and vegetable producers introduced by the European Commission to compensate for the losses caused by the Russian embargo on EU food products, in force since August 2014. It aims to reduce the volume of fruit to be sold on the market and thus ensure the profitability of the production.

The new limit is reportedly the result of efforts by Minister Krzysztof Jurgiel, who has repeatedly requested additional support for the withdrawal of products. The Minister emphasised that Poland is the country that has suffered most as a result of the Russian embargo, as Polish producers were exporting nearly a million tonnes of apples a year to Russia.

According to the Ministry, Poland was granted the largest share of the available limit, exactly 7 thousand 720 tonnes out of a total pool of 17 thousand 680 tonnes.
