Closed border could cost Syrian citrus growers millions

After fighting broke out near the Nassib crossing, Jordan has decided to close its border with Syria. The passage through Nassib is the only reliable crossing between the two countries and is necessary for the transportation of goods between Lebanon and Syria to Gulf states and Jordan.

"The closure of the borders between Syria and Jordan weighed heavily on citrus famers who rely mostly on exporting their produce by land to Gulf and other Arab countries," reported a statement published by National News Agency.

In a statement by the government they stated that citrus farmers would be forced to ship via the Suez Canal which costs double the amount of transportation via the Nassib crossing.

"Export by sea is too expensive and the closure of land borders may cause farmers to incur heavy losses while leading 60% of those working in the agriculture sector to lose their jobs," the statement added.
