Bangladesh town brings 10,300ha of land under vegetable cultivation

Sirajganj, in Bangladesh has brought a vast tract of land under vegetable cultivation this season in order to increase the vegetable production for the region and to also better the living conditions of the farmers.

Several hundreds of poor and marginal farmers of 26 union parshads in the region are successfully producing toxic-free brinjal, garlic, cabbage, cauliflower, radish, chilli, coriander, bitter gourd, snake gourd and ridge gourd. The vegetabless are being supplied to many districts across the country including the capital city.

Officials at the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) said around 10,300 hectares of land under different upazilas of Sirajganj have been brought under vegetable cultivation to produce some 4,500 tonnes of output.

Abdur Razzak, a farmer at Bahula village under Sadar upazila, said the farmers in the region have been using eco-friendly methods to fight pests rather than pesticides in recent years with the assistance of local agriculture office.

Arshed Ali, deputy director of DAE, Sirajganj, said "We are encouraging the poor and marginal growers to cultivate different varieties of vegetables across the district as it is more profitable."
