Morocco taking advantage of difficulties in Italy and Spain

"Considering the low availability of vegetables both in Italy (-75/80%) and Spain (-35/40%), we could say the situation is rather critical at the moment," reports Gaetano Cinturrino (in the photo), Sales Manager of Cinturrino Fruit Management, located in Barcelona's Mercabarna (Spain).

"Italy is currently demanding various Spanish products, mainly aubergines, peppers, courgettes, fennel and tomatoes. For what concerns tomatoes, in fact, Sicily is experiencing colouring problems due to the cold temperatures. The price of fennel is very high. The Italian vegetables most demanded from Spain are green and Roman cauliflower and broccoli."

"Morocco is shipping a lot of produce such as tomatoes, courgettes, aubergines and peppers to Italy and/or Spain directly. Egypt and Tunisia are instead supplying a lot of artichokes, as the cold temperatures in Sicily affected availability."

"I believe everything is linked together - the market is slow so prices are very high. Because of this, I think people are buying more frozen produce and therefore the processing industry is doing well. We'll have to wait and see what happens."
