Egyptian Iceberg lettuce to supply Europe
"Egypt is the only place that has iceberg lettuce available right now," said Claudio Romano, manager of Romaneuro. At present, Italy, Spain, and other countries affected by bad weather have had to look for supplies in other markets. As a result of the increased European demand for this vegetable, prices will spike.
Romaneuro exports iceberg lettuce to Sweden, Finland, Bulgaria, and Spain, Romano said. However, they receive many more requests for merchandise which they have to dismiss because of payment issues. Egyptian farmers want to be paid in advance, so Romaneuro has to ask its customers to also pay in advance, so that they can carry on with their sales. This, however, is not always easily achieved.
Turkey, their main competitor, continues to rank first, as their prices are lower than those offered by the Egyptian market.
