Pricing low but steady
In turn, prices on celery are coming in around $7.95-$10.95 on all sizes. “Last year we had a colder winter and we had some gaps in the harvest schedule. So while this year we’re a week to 10 days ahead of schedule, last year everything was a bit behind schedule and we had a $30-$40 celery market around that time,” he says. Given the volume, Widerburg notes that buyers aren’t buying ahead or speculating. “They’re just buying as needed and when that’s the case and there’s no increased demand, the market stays where it’s at.”
Market also looking stable
Looking ahead, Widerburg anticipates the market to stay the same for the next two to three weeks. “There’s not much chance of it changing unless the rains we’re getting now continue and they have some kind of adverse affect on the celery,” he says.
