Marco Slobbe, Fortuna Frutos:

“Tomato supply from the Canaries is considerably lower”

The wintery conditions have not passed by the Canary Islands. “It might not have been as cold as in Spain, but we have definitely noticed it here on the Islands. The tomato supply is at about 60 per cent of the regular level,” says Marco Slobbe from Fortuna Frutos. “For now, supply will definitely stay on the low side, because we will not receive any tomatoes from the Canary Islands in the coming week.”

Plenty of tomatoes, but they do not colour red because of the colder weather.

“This is obviously resulting in good market prices. Spain was hit the hardest, and besides the lower supply from the Canaries, production in Morocco is also much lower,” Slobbe continues. According to him, tomatoes are nevertheless remaining at a ‘sellable’ level. “It is not as extreme as with other fruit vegetables, with prices four times as high. But retailers all paint a different picture. One supermarket will adjust their prices, while another one does not.”
