Spain: Carrefour denounced for selling oranges at 0.30 Euro

ASAJA-Seville and ASOCIAFRUIT have denounced a new case of unfair retail practices at the Carrefour Camas Aljarafe centre in that province, where Navelina category I oranges are sold to the public for a sale price of 0.30 Euro/kg. This price undoubtedly entails the trivialisation of a quality product and places it well below the minimum profitability threshold for producers, as reflected in two studies on the crop's production costs carried out by the Ministry of Agriculture and the Government of Andalusia.

This type of "retail strategy" undermines the current situation of the citrus fruit market and can be detrimental to a campaign which, to date, and despite many difficulties, has every chance to be resolved on reasonable terms for all links in the food chain.

ASAJA-Seville and ASOCIAFRUIT have reported these practices to the Food Information and Control Agency (AICA), on the understanding that they could be violating provisions of Law 12/2013, devised to improve the functioning of the food chain.
