Contaminated vegetables found in Indian market

Vegetables in the Nellore market were found to be highly contaminated with harmful residues of fertilizers and pesticides yet officials lack the appropriate tools to identify the contaminants.

Not only the most-sought-after and king of vegetables brinjal, many others were found to also have a strong chemical odor giving a terrible experience to the city residents. The only food laboratory at Nacharam in Hyderabad also was not help.

The testing facilities their would fair no better as none of their equipment is designed for vegetables. There are many laboratories under private managements but the government prefers to use only government facilities.

Similarly, Indian Council for Agriculture Research (ICAR) found that detectable levels of residues of commonly used pesticides were noticed most prominently in tomatos (33.3 pc) followed by, brinjal (73.3 pc), okra (14.3 pc), cabbage (88.9 pc) and 100 pc in cauliflower samples.
