Fiji vegetable shortage causes prices to double
"We still face shortage of things like cabbage and coriander and we also buy things at a higher price," Nadi market vendor Mohammed Aniz said.
"Before, we used to buy a bag of eggplants (baigan) for $10 to $20 but that has risen to $40 per bag. To make profits, we have to sell the produce at $2 per heap."
According to Sigatoka Market Vendors Association secretary Daven Singh, prices were on the rise because of the shortage in supply.
"Another reason for the shortage is that export of vegetables has also started and many farmers are supplying to their clients and that's why we have lesser produce like okra (bhindi) and eggplant."
"We are expecting the produce supply to recover in the coming months," he said.
