Jordan considers allowing potato imports to tackle high prices

The Ministry of Agriculture of Jordan is considering allowing the import of potatoes in limited quantities for limited periods, granting the necessary licences for this purpose. Such imports should not have a negative impact on the domestic production and must adhere to import conditions specified by the Ministry, as reported by the Ministry of Agriculture in a press statement.

According to the statement, the main motivation behind this move is the low volume of potatoes available in the central market, which has pushed prices to extraordinarily high levels, and the fact that such volumes are not sufficient to meet the needs of the local market, estimated at about 400 tonnes per day.
