Fiji co-operative looks to increase ginger trade

Jodi is the CEO and partners representative of the Ranadi Plantation Partnership, a farming company that has been operating in Fiji for 40 years now. Back in 2014 the partnership saw a yield of 38 metric tons which still was not enough to meet demand from buyers.

After this, Ranadi helped to form the Fiji Organic Producers' Association — Fiji's first Fairtrade and Pacific Organic Standard certified grower co-operative — to supply its market.

The group consists of 20 farmers growing a diversity of crops including ginger, turmeric, coconut and vanilla, for export, and market vegetables for the local market. It is Jodi's ambition that this becomes a Fiji-wide group.

"In addition to our exporting business, we are actively working to promote organic farming in Fiji, and it's part of our mission to create an active, participatory community in the agricultural sector, so that farmers can benefit from shared knowledge," she said.

"Agriculture is a very dispersed, arguably chaotic, industry in Fiji, and we believe that by creating community and sharing knowledge we can grow the industry."

Jodi has an ambitious plan to start a ginger growing manual which could help other farmers on how to grow the crop.
