Farming company pushing for Pomegranates in Australia

A sustainable farming company has big plans for pomegranates in Australia. They are building one of the world's biggest private pomegranate gene banks and are hoping it can aid the cultivation of the fruit in Australia.

The people behind this, Group Kinetica, have launched PomPersia and have seven pomegranate test farms around Australia, including a gene bank in South Australia. They plan to turn the project into a community of 200 growers by the time 2025 rolls around.

Demand for pomegranates globally has spiked in recent years as experts promote its health benefits.

Global production of the fruit is about 4 million tonnes a year with the major producers being Iran, the United States, China, Turkey, India, and China. Less than 2 per cent of the world’s supply is grown in the southern hemisphere, mainly in South America. Australia produces around 4000 tonnes a year or 0.1 of 1 per cent of the global market.
