Turkey strives to normalise relations with Russia

In an interview with Tass, the Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mevlut Cavusoglu, issued a call for an end to the crisis with Russia and for all trade and travel restrictions to be abolished, claiming that the focus should now be on re-building their strategic relations.

The Minister stressed that the country received an important lesson; Russia and Turkey are very important for each other, and their economies are mutually complementary.

"Russia is a major energy supplier for Turkey, while Turkey can offer the best possible fresh fruits and vegetables to the Russian market," reminded Cavusoglu, mentioning the "interpenetration" of the cultures of both countries.

The key to achieving this normalisation, according to the Turkish Foreign Minister, is to lift the existing restrictions imposed on Turkish exports and the sectoral restrictions to Turkish entrepreneurs, as well as to bring back a fully-fledged visa-free regime.

Cavusoglu said that he will meet this week in Antalya with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, and will then communicate with prime ministers in Russia. The Minister expects that these contacts will help with "normalization and open the way to new horizons."
